I’m not interested in punishment that much. They are certainly being punished with a life sentence, but I don’t really care about that. They are out of society. That’s way more important. I don’t have much use for vengeance.

There is no reliable information on either side. I read the story and gave my interpretation of it. The Bible is a work of fiction and all the characters in this work of fiction are imaginary. Judah did not exist, nor did Tamar. My comment is similar to any interpretation of fiction, like saying “Othello wasn’t really evil, he was mentally ill” about the Shakespearean play. That doesn’t mean Othello existed or that there exists any reliable information about his mental state.

So really your only reliable source is Scripture which you didn’t even bother to reference. It’s really not acceptable to post your opinion as fact. Especially when you are so willing to then turn and call everything about this discussion non-existent just because you can’t provide a source and the Scripture contradicts what you said. Here is the fact according to Scripture.

Genesis 38:15-16 (NIV) When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”

Let’s say I wrote, “When I entered the workshop’s paint booth, I thought the man on the right was a common worker because he had his face covered by his protective gear. It turned out to be the owner of the shop.” This doesn’t mean only shop workers wear protective gear. Lots of people wear protective gear, from shop workers to administrators to customers. Some don’t at their own risk, but many do.

Similarly, the word “because” or “for” (NIV) in this case does not imply that only prostitutes wore veils. Lots of women wore veils. It only means that because she happened to be wearing a veil, he didn’t recognize his daughter-in-law and, since she was standing where prostitutes stand, he thought she was a prostitute.

I repeat, I do not assert this as fact because none of this is fact. None of this happened. It is fiction. Creative writing.

EDIT: I would also add that veils are mentioned many times in the Bible, and are almost never worn by prostitutes. This is a very odd line of reasoning you’re following, that the use of a veil somehow implies the girl was a prostitute.

Hey I went off on a sour note the other day, I guess it was triggered by the “drink the Kool-Aid” comment Reg made. I didn’t think a strike to the face, a fall, or drinking with a glass probelm, or a guillotine are to be taken lightly. But you are a diabetic who needs ulcers to drain urine from his leg. There is sugarless kool-aid but you know about sugar who it destroys nerve endings and paralyzes.

This is not a very good analogy since the scripture doesn’t say anything about her standing or sitting in an area where prostitutes congregate.

By the way, the Bible supports my theory that the veil was to obscure her identity.
