He’s not going to beat Trump. He can run in 2028, no matter who is President and he can ignore Trump.
I hope this harms Trump but I doubt it will. Still, he is clearly betting on Trump being convicted of a crime and losing some Republican support, which is not a ridiculous scenario. It probably won’t help him as Republicans don’t seem to have a problem with a rapist for president, but it’s not a ludicrous gamble he’s taking.

I agree with this. He’ll probably lose. Still, sometimes you take a gamble even if you know you’ll probably lose. That’s what I think is going on here. He may also just want to place himself on the record as the heir apparent for 2028 by running and losing in 2024.
