The Spanish leader condemned the 51st state idea fast and directly. But the EU I have not heard one of their leaders say Canada should join it. Glad our trade with Europe has increased since the CEATA agreement was made. Saw on the news that CDN flag sales have doubled over last year and I notice more CDN flags in Hope and Chilliwack recently and CBC radio had a segment yesterday about ppl harassing Tesla owners and I know the Tesla charging station has seen an increase in mild vandalism here in Hope. I like how the American anthem is booed at some Canadian sporting events.
The movement is young and may not go anywhere. I don’t know of any EU or Canadian leaders that support it yet. It’s not at that stage. This is wild speculation from people like me who hope it happens. I just see it being such a perfect marriage.
Europe needs land and opportunity for growth, and they desperately need a safe and secure energy supply. Canada needs history and universities and museums and culture, and we need a market for our raw materials and energy. This would be the most advantageous move in the EU’s history and in Canada’s history.
At a social level, we could live and work in Europe and they could live and work here. If this happened, for the first time ever I might envy the next generation in Canada and the EU. Their lives could be more beautiful than ours, and there is no better gift we could give them.
Sure sounds good but we of course are not a European nation.
In the EU charter, “European Nation” is not defined, so it’s open to interpretation. Most legal analysts I’ve seen suggest Canada would easily qualify based on our history.
Ok, this isn’t joining the EU but it is brilliant. Canada and Germany are negotiating a joint response to US tariffs. If the US tariffs Canada, Germany will match our response. If the US tariffs Germany, Canada will match the response. It is not a deal yet, but this is the negotiation that is happening right now.
Sounds wonderful. US/RUSSIA relations improve at your expense.
Glad we thought of it. Well played.
I honestly don‘t see how Europe would be able to stand up against the US, but also Russia and China. Cause, what Sachs leaves out is, that Russia is equally manipulating other puppet countries by using all those means the US does. China does it too and will increasingly do this the more economic and military power it gains.
I just wish to hear Sachs making detailed suggestions.
And I want the US military bases out of Europe finally. That would be a good, tiny first step, which each single country can decide fast for itself without needing the slow EU burocracy.
Will you rebuild PMC Wagner Group?
It is totally clear to me that we are going to see a US/Russia reconciliation, but their economies have been totally divorced and I doubt Putin will allow himself any new dependency on the US. The US will likely stop standing in the way of Russia rebuilding elsewhere, though.
The EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, and all other first world countries from South Korea to Japan to Taiwan all just have to slowly divorce themselves from the US and hope for the best.
The problem comes when the US gets desperate. They will fall as surely as the Soviet Union fell in the early 90s. It could be in as little as 20 years, although 30 or 40 seems more likely. At that point, they will still probably have the best military in the world and they may decide to invade rich countries as a way of staying alive.
I would love to see the EU develop nuclear arms. Canada too. If someone is going to invade, let’s make it hurt.
Honestly, I didn‘t dare to write it. But I had the same thought regarding nuclear weapons for Germany. Europe needs to stop being a US puppet and start thinking and acting for their own interests. With a strong military to let any superpower think at least twice before making such blunt threats like Trump did toward Greenland. I really thought those times are behind us. But Putin and Trump proved me wrong. I hope the Danes don‘t prolong the US base on Greenland.
i would be much more pragmatic… since its obvious usa is no longer our friend just take the nukes that usa has stationed already in our countries ![]()
That sounds like something Trump would do.
You could always say that you don’t know where they went.
lol yes thats the language he understands
It’s clear where Ukraine’s nuclear arsenal went. From what was signed in 1992 and it’s joining as non nuclear weapon state to the Nom Nuclear Proliferation Treaty in 1996. All those weapons were transferred to Russia for supposed dismantling. The silos decommissioned. It took until 2001 for this process.
Clinton regrets brokering the deal. The nuclear weapons may have been Ukraine’s only deterrent against Russia. The missiles were also targeted at key points in the United States. Ukraine gave these up for the terms of the treaty. Putin ignored the treaty and the US did not give support (yet) equivalent to a salvo of that nuclear arsenal towards Moscow.
Do you remember that big deal about the weapon inspectors in Iraq? I’m wondering now if some of those missiles might have turned up intact.
Or where else they might be in the world. I’m not even sure Russia was inspected for complete dismantling of received nuclear weapons from Ukraine. Did the number go down or simply location and ownership transfer?
Maybe that’s the mess… Also Russia accusing Ukraine of bioweapons. That sounds typical Russia. Falsely accuse Ukraine’s of developing bioweapons because they are hiding their received Nuclear weapons. Just to redirect suspicion. Also it’s probably their fear (like serious fear) that they still would consider the treaty And nuclear weapons no loss and just be as ruthless to develop the bioweapons.
That was also a big concern with Saddam. Bioweapons. Where would he get help from?
NK might be sending troops to Ukraine to be killed easily by drones for receiving some of those weapons from Russia. Even just a warhead or two. Maybe just for putting in a bid they wouldn’t want disclosed.
You the saying about streetlights. One thing I’ve learned is clever balance
.
Who knows what Hunter Biden was into.
The Dansk are voting with their wallets.
Edit: I just noticed this at the bottom of their page.

This is so very true. “Oh this won’t matter much” is the reason so little gets done.
Do you actually think that is a good move for Europe?
absolutely
I doubt it‘s a good move for Germany, but given that we paid already the highest price for supporting Ukraine than any other country, we also have the most to lose in Europe (if also less then the USA) in case this war is lost. Cause then NATO really is dead. Good luck with China and Russia I just say. I think it’s a necessity for Europeans to stand together. It‘s the only chance we have. I just wish Orban wouldn‘t torpedate our support for Ukraine that much. The only good thing is that thanks to Trump, Erdogan seem to stop playing both sides now, while Trump unfortunately started to act like Erdogan before.
I still don‘t get why the U.S. under Biden wasn‘t more aggressive. The US wasn‘t even at risk to face any retaliation attack by the Russians. If, then Germany probably would have received any such blow.
Russia is at the brink. You just need to tip them over with one huge conventional effort.
