Our air quality is among the best in the world. You’re right though, every few years smoke from wildfires raises our levels badly. The worst I have ever seen was when there were wildfires in Oregon a few years back.
I remember, 2020 or 2021? Doesn’t seem like it was that long ago. It was bad. It is believed that fire was caused by human hands and not lasers but it’s still under investigation. I believe Antifa members were also looting at that time, which places them under suspicion for good reason. 11 people died.
One major fire in California was caused by transformers exploding the power companies own security cameras recorded the evidence they were sued into bankruptcy. Lightning causes many forest fires and yes some are caused deliberately by humans seen video of it.
We’ve done this in some Massachusetts schools. Seems like a good idea.
I wouldn’t ban them, but you have to leave them in your locker.
This is not just a kid thing. 20% of the people in my yoga class bring their phones in. My teacher from 15 years ago would never have allowed that and that was adults paying, lol.
I’m also not allowed to use my cell in the lab. I have no service or time, so there would be no reason. It is also fairly dirty.
They will. Michele, it’s a probably a money saver. The idea is: spend $1000 a month and save the $50,000 you’d pay anyway to support the homeless. And the idea also goes that some percentage of them will get jobs, will no longer get the $1000/mo, and will start paying into the system.
Beyond this, we have to do something. Our current economic system will not survive another 30 years. AI is going to do everything better than we do it.
My guess is something like Government goes into the business of making energy and everyone gets their share of non-transferrable energy credits each month which are earmarked for food and shelter and transport so people can’t make stupid decisions, plus some discretionary credits which they can waste.
I’m just talking off the top of my head, though. I really have no idea what’s coming.
You’re lucky you can do that without any concern for how it may affect your credit score.
When you say “stupid decisions” do you mean like buying two watches when you can only wear one at a time? That may be a good rule to follow. We are very wasteful here. It would probably require minor adjustments in our thought process but I’m sure we could learn a new system.
And when you say “waste” do you mean we can throw them away, even though someone else could use them? Or do you mean we can buy two watches with them?
I expect this system would be cashless so throwing them away has little meaning. They’re numbers in a computer. You could refuse to use them, of course. Or buy two (or more) watches.
Oh, I see, so we could sell them if we had no use for them. At $1000.00 per month I don’t see anything getting wasted. What if we don’t get enough credits to sustain us?
Michele, I’m just guessing like everyone else, but I can tell you what I’m seeing with my own eyes and what a lot of smart people are seeing too (lke the guys at RethinkX, just as one example).
First, now that I think of it, energy credits probably won’t work because energy is likely going to be generated locally everywhere. Chinese advancements in solar and battery tech are making it possible for every house to generate its own power and go off grid.
As I see it, we are on track for almost all labour to be worth less than $1 per hour in 30 years. None of us will be useful anymore, or effectively none of us. Building a house that currently costs $500,000 might cost $10,000, but AI will do all the work. A nice car might cost $3,000. Or $3. Or maybe these things will just be free. What do we pay when robots build other robots and mine the raw materials needed and do all the labour? Who are we paying? I don’t know the answers. We might be on track for all-out communism, but run by AI so there’s no corruption.
Everything I do in life that gives me pleasure is difficult. Not everyone can do it. Even my hobbies like Amateur Radio are full of experimentation and trying to make things work, and because I’m knowledgeable in that area, it’s rewarding to me to be able to do things that others can’t do. Well, in a few decades, AI will do all that better than any of us. If I want to make a Meshtastic network of low-power transmitters, I will ask AI to do that and it will just do it. Probably in minutes or seconds. I lead an Advanced Amateur Radio group, but why learn advanced electronics when AI can just do anything you ask it to faster and better than the most advanced human ever could?
I have a feeling that a few generations from now, every human will live like a king as far as material needs are concerned, but they will have no reason to live at all. Humans are not wired to do nothing. Take my work away from me, and then take my hobbies away from me, and I’m not sure there’s enough left for me to want to be alive. I doubt the coming generations will lack for material things, but I’m not sure they’ll have a reason to wake up in the morning.
