Woodworking

Ok, I don’t know anything about woodworking but why not just pre-drill the holes so they don’t split the wood and use stainless screws so they don’t rust? This is from a total non-woodworker so if it’s a stupid idea, don’t be surprised.

the pilot holes were too small
that causes the cracking

Easy enough to unscrew the drywall screws, drill slightly larger holes, and then put in stainless, no?

the internet gives a chart for pilot hole size for any gauge for hard and soft wood

yes but the wood is already cracked

Yes, that makes sense. Once it’s cracked it’s useless for load bearing I’d assume. Garbage and start over or is it salvageable?

treat it like a witch and burn it
thou shalt not suffer a saw horse to live

also, countersinking for the screw head allows the screws to press down evenly
minimizing the forces that cause the cracking

That wood is cheap. Looks like pine 2x4. It’s also easy to cut. Why not just cut a new piece to replace the one where the wood is cracked and put in stainless hardware properly pre-drilled? Paint it white after.

Disclaimers:

  • I don’t know why Bill hates sawhorses but I am going to assume it’s just weirdness on his part and they’re fine.

  • I know nothing about woodworking and everything I say on this topic (and most topics) should be ignored. Thankfully it is.

lastly, working so near the end of pine is a bad idea
flush edges are fine for hardwood furniture
leave a little overlap and the excess wood works like a kind of glue to prevent that fracturing

Because Reggie. There is too much superficial work. Also it still holds. This was a scrap wood project. I got lazy and didn’t even use pilot holes for 3 of the boards. I should have cut them longer and let them protrude so I wouldn’t drill so close to the end. I could do it over but if it holds why?

Have you seen those commercials with the flex tape where they repair fiberglass boat hulls? I could have wrapped the boards in the gorilla tape I have before drilling them. I’m trying to see what emergency repairs I can make with old wood.

It bothers you doesn’t it?

And Bill don’t show me the work you do. I’ll show you the work you do.

and here i thought he was coherent

i shall not pass that way again

It has to hold together by supernatural forces and prayer. If that sounds ridiculous take a look at some of the people doing construction.

Seeing is believing and it holds with those split boards.

Or test The Lord.

I was able to pick up the sawhorses by each one of the cracked short braces. Do you think a board on your desk is guaranteed to be sturdier?

You made that with peanut butter and sawdust for all I know.

I can gorilla tape the centers of those braces.

I hope you’re not planning on standing on those.
