Are you kidding? I could do that route in three weeks if I was willing to drive twelve hours a day, which I might have been able to average twenty years ago but not now. Nine weeks would be better, though, at four hours a day driving.

I did hit Maine. I hit every state except Alaska and Hawaii. I don’t know anyone in Maine, though, at least not that I remember.

I doubt I will ever do this trip. I am getting older and I just don’t care anymore about road trips. Certainly not on a motorcycle, although that bug seems to bite me every spring. The fact that road trips no longer move me doesn’t mean that I am ready to go and die, though. I enjoy flying to places. I just no longer need to see every point between here and there.

I said tour, Reg, not pass through.

What about that guy Bill?

Yeah, I don’t think you have the stamina to take on such a long journey at your age, anyway.

Oh, he told us he was dying some time ago. I assumed he had died. He hates me, anyway, if he’s alive. He should’ve married Kyaela. She’s probably dead, too.

Just noticed this. Absolutely true.

My parents drove from Vancouver to Toronto through the US coasts basically it took 3 months. I was surprised when she said she was surprised the trip went so well but I later became aware of the problems in their marriage so stuck in a car and then in a motel room for 3 months.

Hahaha and Reg said he could travel the entire country within 3 weeks.

Did the trip lead to divorce?

I could. It wouldn’t be pleasant, but I could. The average long-haul truck driver does the Vancouver-Toronto haul in 5 days.

Yes, Reg, but again, I was talking about touring the entire country so that you can actually see beyond the run down drug-infested cities along the coastal states. You’re talking about a quick marathon so we are not on the same page. In fact, we aren’t even in the same book.

Correct. I have no interest in staying a week (or even a few days) in each town. Most US, Canadian, Australian and European towns look alike, and the minor differences are of no particular interest to me. I’d stay an extra day or two in a few places, but I’d be totally content driving through most places.

Actually, I’d be totally content just flying to a handful of places I’d like to see that I haven’t been to, or don’t remember because I was too young, or was working so I didn’t have time to see anything. Charleston SC, Biloxi MS, the Grand Canyon, post-hurricane New Orleans, Portland OR (been there several times but never spent any sightseeing time there), Salt Lake City with some tickets to the Tabernacle Choir, perhaps Boston MA, maybe the museums in DC. Those are the things that popped immediately into my mind, but there must surely be others. I’d rather spend my proposed road trip time flying and visiting each of these places for a week than seeing a hundred towns on various interstates and peeing in a hundred rest areas, even though I very much respect the US for taking the trouble to make those rest areas.

None of these are huge bucket list items to me but it would be nice to see them. If I die without seeing any of them, that’s fine.

What state would you like to visit the most Michele?

I’m going with Arizona, although I have driven through it. I never got out of the car.

Two cities I’ve never really visited are Chicago and Philadelphia. Philadelphia is not that far away. My wife has a negative view of Philadelphia. I believe it is because of their crazy sports fans. Neither of their signature foods appeal to me. So asking locals might be a problem, but I’m sure it’s diverse.

I just checked. It’s a 6 hour drive to Philadelphia.

Don’t you live close to an airport? I’d hop a flight in the morning of whatever day you get off, rent a car, see whatever you can see, then fly home in the evening. lol. I’ve done that a few times now for places Erika hadn’t been to.

I’m about 20 minutes from manchester airport and 50 from Boston. I’ll look up some flights.

It’s a 97 minute flight. $500 round trip for each of us.

That’s way too much. When we flew to Edmonton and Calgary this way, flights were $30 USD (seriously) each way. I would drive.

Yes. I think I’d drive as well. Quebec city is only 6 hours away.

Interestingly, Google says Frontier will take you there for about $60 USD round trip. If that’s real, I would fly.

Thanks!

What a stupid thing to even consider only for being able to say having been to 48 US states.

What a shame!!! You only see minor differences because you don’t look beyond the concrete jungle of any destination.

From memory, what did you see in those destinations besides the Tabernacle Choir and museums?

If you drive at night, you can pull over anywhere and pee. I do get the flying thing. The older I get the less energy I have for travel but you miss so much on quick flights. No one blames you for that since age is a significant factor and time is increasingly an issue.

It’s only fine because you’re never expecting to see more than what you know you’re going for.

Oh, joy! I bet your wife felt rushed the whole time you were gone. You could at least book an overnight flight, tightwad.

I’ve passed through almost all of them. The only states I haven’t toured are a handful of the northern states. Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. I don’t really care to go anywhere these days but if I were going to travel any destination in America, it would probably be Montana. In pictures, it’s a beautiful state, especially in the winter months.

You’ve never seen the Grand Canyon? You never walked on the edge of the cliff? Most people think hot, dry and dusty sweltering heat but Arizona is a much more than that. It’s more than just the Grand Canyon, although I admit, it is the biggest attraction but there is a huge petrified forest to the south worth passing through. You would also see an Indian reservation. You would think that it would be a hundred mile section but the reservation runs along the highway. I believe the poorest of the poor in Arizona live there.

I have passed through there but I didn’t eat. Food says a lot about the culture of the area but what draws you to Philadelphia and Chicago?
