Travels

You put entirely too much focus on their appearance when really you should consider what they are capable of. They could be midgets for all I care. They are some of the cruelest and merciless murderers in the world. To me, they were not just allowed but practically escorted into America from prisons in their own countries, released to do here what they’ve already done to their own people.

Use them for vaccine research and investigational products.

You are often wrong. Enjoy your hiking trip. I found a unique museum in my news feeds this morning but it’s in Sweden and I know you well enough to know you won’t be traveling there. You or anyone might want to wait until after you’ve eaten your next meal before you click on it…I mean, assuming you plan to read it.

lol nice, but how can it be the most disgusting food in the world if no american “restaurants” supplied their “food”?

twinkie

A Twinkie is a golden sponge cake with a creamy filling popular in the United States. It is distributed by the subcompany Hostess, which is owned by Dallas-based Interstate Bakeries Corporation.

A common urban legend claims that Twinkies have a shelf life of forever, or can last for a relatively long time of ten, fifty, or one hundred years due to chemicals used in production. While this urban legend is false, they really can last a long time (25 days or so), due to the fact that Twinkies are made without dairy products and thus spoil more slowly than most bakery items.

“Twinkie” is the correct spelling, “Twinky” is for ignorant rednecks.

What’s your favorite think about El Salvador so far?

The transformation is pretty amazing. San Salvador has gone from the most dangerous city in the world to the most secure in Latin America. It’s clean and safe. There is very little visible poverty and no visible organized crime or widespread drug use. I didn’t see a single facial tattoo while I was there, nor did I see any obvious drug addicts.

The infrastructure appears to be excellent (although the Internet in my otherwise beautiful hotel was crap). The country has only 6 million people so it doesn’t have the kind of museums and art that a big country has. Still, its small museums are nice and well kept.

Very interestingly, the public bathrooms are all pristine, unlike Guatemala which was far more spectacular overall but had disgusting public bathrooms.

I asked everyone I saw what they thought of Nayib Bukele and they all loved him. No exceptions. They accept the trade of some innocent people going to prison in exchange for many innocent people no longer being killed or harmed by gangs.

The people were extremely polite and friendly. I saw some motorcycle cops and asked if I could take a photo of them and they said, sure come sit on our bikes, so I got photos of myself sitting on a Savadoran police motorcycle. lol. Everywhere we went, people were eager to chat, although as usual, I had to start the conversation. I’m usually happy to do that, so I talked to a lot of people all over the country.

They have a huge and beautiful new library and stadium (the latter still under construction), donated and built by the Chinese, proudly flying the Chinese flag. The people I talked to were well aware of what was going on in the world and knew clearly that China was their future, not the USA. None of them wanted closer ties with the US, but they all wanted closer ties with China, while acknowledging the risks there.

One of their former presidents banned black immigration and there are still almost no black people who live there, even now that those restrictions are long gone. I saw a few black American tourists but that was it.

I will post photos later. I have over 1000 of them, mostly duplicates, which I will prune down to about 100 and then link them.

We just landed in Vancouver a few hours ago. El Salvador was a very good trip. Again, it’s a small country and it’s not spectacular. There’s nothing there that makes you say,“OMG that is stunningly beautiful,” like Antigua in Guatemala, or the Museo de Maya in Guatemala City. It does look like a great place to live, though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more content group of people.

PS: Montréal was a huge disappointment. It’s disgusting now, which is heartbreaking for those of us who once loved that city. Potholes and litter and graffiti everywhere. I have no idea what happened, but some local politicians clearly need to be shot.

Reggie, why this wasn’t you and your wife I have no idea. I advise you to stop traveling and stop pushing your luck.

What do you think they did to turn San Salvador around?

They used UN funds paid in by American tax payers to send their criminals here.

How was their food? What did you eat?

Why would citizens accept sending innocent people to prison and if they are innocent, why is sending them to prison an exchange for harm by gangs and murder?

valid question to ask americans these days

Why not ask you?

because where i live everyone gets a chance to defend themselves in court

Two words: Nayib Bukele. He has made huge news around the world. He threw just about everyone with a facial gang tattoo in prison. Over 75,000 more people are now in jail than were before, almost all with those facial gang tattoos. He has been incredibly draconian about organized crime. If you’re in the drug business, the odds are high you’re going to be sent to an extremely uncomfortable prison he built called the Terrorism Confinement Center (in Spanish, Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo, or CECOT). This place is pretty much a concentration camp for criminals, with about as much due process as Auschwitz, although there is no mass killing. The end result is that the whole country is just totally safe everywhere.

What nonsense. The UN funded none of this, and Americans paid nothing. You, like many Republicans, are under the deluded impression that the rest of the world is dependent on the US for everything. It is not.

The food was excellent, but pretty much the same as we have in Canada. El Salvador doesn’t have as distinct and unique a culture as Guatemala. They do have a unique flatbread dish called Pupusas which I don’t really love, and that’s what most people think of when Salvadoreño food is brought up.

It’s a simple trade, Michele. Accept that human rights are going to be reduced in exchange for a safe, clean country where very few people get murdered and your teenage daughter isn’t going to be gang raped and tattooed as a slave for the gangs.

Before Bukele, a kid in El Salvador really didn’t have a chance at life. He/she grew up knowing the choice was gangs or poverty. And they didn’t really have a choice because the gangs would come and rape or kill you if you didn’t join. Ten years ago, there were 6,656 murders in El Salvador. Last year there were 114. El Salvador is now far safer than just about anywhere in the US, Canada or Europe.

This is exactly the tradeoff. You don’t get a trial there. You don’t get due process. If you’re in a gang, or in the drug trade, you just go to jail. This results in many people, perhaps thousands, being imprisoned for crimes they didn’t commit. Some points on this:

  • Bukele admits openly that some people are in prison for crimes they did not commit. He notes that while the number is not zero, far fewer innocent people are being harmed today than before.

  • Salvadoreño criminals stupidly chose to identify themselves with facial tattoos. This made it easy to round up them up. Criminals elsewhere are less easy to identify, so this technique would be somewhat harder to apply in other countries. Not impossible, but more difficult.

  • Because the overwhelming majority of people imprisoned have facial tattoos, even if they didn’t commit the crimes they were accused of, the odds are high they committed some other crimes. They are self-identified gang members.

  • Everyone I talked to loves Bukele and loves what their country has become. No exceptions. And this isn’t some kind of North Korean weirdness where everyone is too afraid to criticize the government. There’s easily as much (or more) free speech there as there is in the west. They just see the nearly magical transformation and they love it.

That’s bullshit, Reg. They were given gift cards and directions for their trip.

This is not about dependency on the U.S. It’s about an illegal invasion.

What is what most people think of?

It may be a trade but the imprisoned are not innocent, not by a long shot.

That’s because all El Salvador’s criminals migrated to the southern border of America where crime rose during the Biden administration. Some of which were never prosecuted.

This is mostly nonsense.

I asked:

Did El Salvador’s criminals migrate to other places or were they thrown in jail?

ChatGPT said:

Mostly thrown in jail. Under President Nayib Bukele’s crackdown starting in 2022, over 75,000 alleged gang members and affiliates were arrested under a state of emergency. Mass incarceration, not migration, is the primary reason for the drop in gang violence. Some criminals may have fled, but large-scale migration hasn’t been reported.
