Surrey never had any male hookers on the street, or at least none that I ever saw.
The only other female prostitute I can remember later seeing working at a normal job was a pretty brunette that I walked by a few times on City Parkway. She asked me if I needed anything (prostitute-speak for asking if I wanted to pay her to have sex). I said no and commented that she looked too clean cut to be doing this. She smiled and said something like, “I look pretty good for a crackhead, don’t I?” and we both laughed.
A few years later, I saw her working as a cashier in Home Depot. She still looked great. I didn’t say anything about our previous encounter and she didn’t appear to recognize me, which is a bit unusual as most people remember me. Perhaps she didn’t want to revisit that period of her life again, or perhaps that time was all just a drug-fueled fog to her. Or perhaps I just wasn’t memorable to her. I will never know.
EDIT: I remember one other prostitute who is pertinent, at least somewhat, to this conversation. I didn’t see this one work a real job later, but she must have since prostitution is no longer a good way to make a living here.
I was going to the data center when I saw her on a street corner. Like the other prostitute I mentioned above, she looked really clean cut and nice. I was having huge trouble finding a cleaner for the data center. I said to her, “I have a data center down the street. I’ll give you $15/hr for 8 hours to clean it. We have all the supplies you will need. If you do a good job, this could become a regular gig for you. You can come with me right now if you agree.”
This was almost 20 years ago and $15/hr was good money back then. She looked at me as though I had insulted her very badly and, after a bit of a pause, she said icily, “I’m a hooker, not a fucking cleaning lady.”
I will never forget her.
