I don’t think it’s shrinking. Where did you get that number? I think musicians are trying to transition away from record labels, who, btw, are leaving musicians with as little as 8% of royalties, to take ownership of their own music. Can you blame them for that?
Record labels operate the same way as the movie industry. They weigh musicians down with certain styles and then make high demands for a stellar performance with intimidating threats of being cut from the label. I’m sure musicians dislike being controlled like that by labels who are driven by numbers and profits that cut musicians royalties to a fraction of what it should be.
Musicians are turning to digital streaming to transition at least part of the 92% in royalties they lose every day back into their pocket with independent companies like Ditto.
Changing from product-based to a service-based company may sound like a challenge for record labels but they do still offer an impressive array of connections in radio, marketing, publishing and distribution, if a person is willing to pay for it. It’s not like record labels really lose. They are left with developing artists in a way that benefits the musician and not the label but labels no longer experience a high percentage of royalties from CD’s.
I do think as long as their are beautiful voices, there will be good music. Have you ever heard me sing, I’m a Little Teapot? Have you ever heard Dan laugh?
