This is in two completely different realms assuming you are saying you believe one earns merit in this world and not eternity.
I get that they are two different things, but for me it is impossible to accept that a person can live a good life, help the poor and weak, then die and go to eternal torment because they guessed wrong about how the universe was created.
It is impossible for me to accept that someone can live a horrible life, killing innocent people, stealing and harming others, then say sorry on their deathbed, accept Christ and be granted eternal salvation.
I also think any God that would set up such a system is incredibly evil. Yes, I judge your God.

If you put yourself in Gods shoes. In the Old Testament, He commanded loyalty above all things and was rejected. Through that rejection and death of Christ, He only asked to be acknowledged. Because His burden is light. You make it so much harder than it really is.
