Chess

Alireza has lost 22.7 pts in this tournament. He has dropped from 6th to 16th. I guess creating those bogus tournament didn’t help.

Gukesh has moved up from 16th to 6th in the world. They have flip-flopped.

Gukesh drew Hikaru with black. Hikaru is out.

Caruana and Nepo are both under 10 minutes. Looks like Caruana has blown the game. He might even lose.

Nepo may have just blown the game too lol.

Fabi and Nepo drew. Fabi was in some time trouble.

Congrats to Gukesh! Now go win! The entire world, except for :cn: will be rooting for him.

Gukesh deseved it. He and Nepo were most consistent throughout. It also helped that he played Alireza in round 13.

Go Dommaraju Gukesh! Youngest contender ever. 17 years old and fighting for the World Chess Championship. Phenomenon.

yes very nicely done!
nepo didnt lose a game this tourney and i already saw him draw into becoming the winner again lol but this is exactly what the chess world needs

I’m not sure I’d go that far. This kid is a phenomenon and I hope he wins, but several things work against his being “what the chess world needs”:

  • Everyone still knows Magnus is the best player on Earth.
  • The kid is Tamil, not very good looking, and speaks English with a thick accent.
  • Gukesh says nothing even remotely interesting. Any generative AI could do his interviews.
  • What the chess world needs is a fearless disruptor. Someone as dashing as Bobby Fischer who would show up to the WCC wearing the flag of Palestine and tell the organizers to go f themselves if they don’t like it. Or something like that. Soft-spoken Gukesh isn’t that guy.

I agree that his interviews are boring. So are Caruana’s. Hikaru is less boring. I don’t know that Ding even interviews. I’ll definitely root for Gukesh in the fall, though. It’s too bad for Fabi, but he did not get off to a good start.

Gukesh is not ugly to me. Looks healthy.

He’s not ugly, true, but he is not dashing or interesting looking. If he was walking down the street, I wouldn’t notice him.

no lol we already got a disruptor with hans niemann… this young coloured boring polite guy is exactly what the chess world needs now

True! And people talked about chess. Everyone talked about it. Even people who don’t care about chess talked about chess. Everyone remembers Niemann offering to strip right then and there to prove he had no comms devices on him. My 90 year old mother asked me what it was all about.

Nobody’s going to talk about Gukesh. Or Ding Liren for that matter.

Ding is a top 3 most boring champ. He doesn’t play chess.

Kramnik is probably the least liked champ of all time. Seems like an asshole. Seems pro putin, unlike Nepo. Accuses those better than him of cheating, lol. At least Fischer was interesting. Kramnik is boring and an asshole. He’s much uglier than Gukesh. Anand beating Kramnik made him even more likable.

No question.

Pragg is uglier than Gukesh and his accent is just as bad, but everyone loves him. I don’t know why. He has a charm about him. He’s not soft spoken. He says interesting things. I love him much more than Gukesh.

That quote was true. He didn’t have many draws, but he finished 7/14.

I didn’t notice this. Magnus didn’t think Gukesh would do well. I don’t blame Magnus. Very few people predicted this tourney.

Also this. I’m not the only one who thinks Fischer was the greatest.

Youtube saw me watching a lot of chess recently so it is offering me up a lot of chess videos now. This is Bobby Fischer on women playing chess.

Edit: Also this.

And this:

Gukesh may be the real deal. He just beat Magnus brilliantly.

EDIT: Here’s Gukesh beating Caruana. I’m starting to believe.
