i play 100 points better with the morphine
the fentanyl patches take 200 away, though
i call it a draw, which may explain my original low rating
i fill my remaining hours with chess and medical research and root beer floats

I located your chess board.

And BBAD.

Hikaru just qualified for the candidates again. I wonder if Ding will defend. It seems he has played less chess than Magnus since becoming champ. I assume China will force him to defend, but if he goes a year between playing, he could get crushed.

I’d love an American to win. Go Hikaru! He’s probably been at least top 2 the last year. Maybe top 1.

Vidit from India won the tournament and qualified for the candidates. :india: and :us: clearly 2 best chess nations.

Hans Niemann came in tied for 24th out of 114. Unfortunately for him, only the top two get to candidates. Alireza also came in 24th.

Alireza will be able to compete in candidates if Magnus doesn’t, which I assume he will not. He is ranked 5th. The top 5 go…

Carlsen
Caruana
Ding
Nakamura
Firouja

The top rated player qualifies, but Caruana and Nakamura already did, so he will probably get in.

Anish Giri is 25 points behind in a tie for 7th (Nepomniatchi is in 6th but he already qualified), but came in 7th in the tournament, so I would assume he’d pick up some points.

Respect. Screw MBS.

EDIT: This is several years old. Still 100% valid.

Ding finally played a tournament. He sucked. He even lost to a woman. His tactic of not playing any tournaments seems to have not worked. He finished 9th out of 14, but there were some 2400s playing in it.

Go Hikaru! The Americans have a chance in the candidates.

I find Hikaru irritating but Ding is a horrible champion.

Hikaru is odd, but I’ll still root for him. No American champs for a while now.

274 year old chess problem. I didn’t get it. lol. I mean, I got the first move, but not the next.

Hmmm…I don’t get what the mystery was. All those moves looked like normal moves to me. I mean, I’m not sure what I would have done with the bishop. Moving it seemed like a wasted move but it’s like the commentator pointed out, it didn’t matter. The king was cornered and had no space to move.

Bishop to H1 was novel.

It’s difficult to see it that way since the moves were provided but I’m sure you’re right. The only way to profit in the move had to be H1.

Bishop to H1 was throwing away the bishop (the opposing king takes it easily). That wasn’t intuitive to me, but it was clearly a winning move.

Well, sure, Reg. Most people don’t think to sacrifice their pieces for position but that didn’t seem like a mystery move to me since his options seemed limited. I wish I hadn’t seen the move before I had the chance to review the options.

i like this simple puzzle; what move should white make to win?

Kb5. I agree. Good puzzle. It took me 20 seconds. That’s why I don’t like blitz.
