We are even too coward to secure the sky over Western Ukraine, for providing a fleeing corridor for civilians as well as securing our weapon support for Ukraine.

I can imagine that easily, myself. I actually think the odds are better than 50-50 that this conflict goes nuclear, at very least inside the confines of the Ukraine. The thing about the economic war so far is that it has left Russia with nothing to lose. Even if it takes Ukraine, its prestige and economic power are gone. It is going to spend the next 30 years declining into irrelevance. Putin knows this and is almost certainly thinking of ways he might be able to get the west to sue for peace.
At the other side if Putin really manages to blackmail the West and the Ukraine gets under (and it certainly will within a few weeks maximum without the West enforcing at least a safe flying zone over parts of Ukraine), and China and India keeping on doing business with Russia, then the West (especially USA as the superpower on the way into Nirwana), has as much to lose as Putin. Europe loses in both cenarios though. Anyway, what really counts is morality, not the worries of any of the superpowers geostrategical and hence egoistical goals. As Europeans we can’t watch how Putin attacks a souvereign country in Europe and deliberately killing civilians, only because it decided to become democratic and pro-Western. That’s a war crime going on in Europe. If we not stand up now, when then. But we can’t without the US. I just heard in the news this morning, the German Bundeswehr’s arsenal is empty and can’t send more weapons to the Ukraine. We simply couldn’t imagine to get into a war with Russia or any other superpower again.
