Michele, the US makes a lot of stuff and consumes a lot of stuff. So do most countries. Each country can say to itself, “we will just make and consume stuff ourselves” or “we will trade with the world, selling our stuff to them and buying their stuff from them”.
It is common sense that one country can’t make the best of everything. It will make some things better than everyone else, but not everything. The Swiss make the best mechanical watches. The Japanese make the best cameras and motorcycles. And so on.
The countries that trade get the best of everything. They may not make the best cell phones but if they make great cheese or steel, they can sell that and buy the best cell phones from whoever is making them.
Countries that trade in this way are the best in the world. Canada, Western European nations, Australia, etc. They are the richest and have the highest living standards.
Countries that don’t trade look like unflushed toilets. North Korea, Turkmenistan, Eritrea, Belarus, and Afghanistan. And we can add Trump’s USA to that list, soon.
You add whoever you want to that list. Those countries have tariffed us Hell and back. Those countries do well. Now we are doing well but we are just a third world shithole for it.
