The Name BBAD

Michele asked me in PM where I got the name BBAD. I’m going to repost my response to her below in case anyone else is interested.

The name BBAD? Be bad, of course. It was 2006 and the Zone had just announced it was going to close. By then I had realized my chess wasn’t going to improve and I had lost interest in that game. I enjoyed socializing online but I despised constantly being booted because some sysop didn’t like what I wrote.

I decided to make a site where people could be as bad what they wanted, even if others disagreed vehemently. Let them post that the Iraq war was great or that it was a war crime. Nobody would stop them. Let them post that God is a myth or that God is sovereign over all things. Again, nobody would stop them.

Be as bad as you want. That’s how I came up with the name.

It was a wonderful learning experience for me. I learned, among other things, that free speech is usually stupid speech. It’s not so bad now that the site is in its twilight, but at its peak it was ugly. We lost so many good people because others were free to be idiots. Women especially would come, get insulted, and leave. I am still generally for free speech, but I have learned that unlimited free speech is as bad as no free speech. In fact, the two are essentially the same since unlimited free speech leads to no speech at all.

Now nobody is left but I am not inclined to let it die yet. It harms nobody if I leave it up, and if someone should happen to post I will engage with them. It’s a comfortable place for me online.
