Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), is vastly better off under its communist government than it was under the government the west fought to defend. When we were growing up, Ho Chi Minh was seen as an evil communist dictator. Now, US presidents (including Trump and Obama) have visited the city named after this allegedly wicked man, and booming Vietnam is seen as an example of how things should be done in Asia.
The South Vietnam govt ceased to be a democracy after a military coup. Though Vietnam had its problems it has less human rights violations than China which retreated after 30 days when they invaded in 1979. Vietnam invaded Kampuchea and drove out the murderous Pol Pot regime and left not keeping an inch of territory. That Vietnamese part of east Van is called Little Saigon on the signs.
