We have a unit in the hospital called the CDU. It stands for Clinical Decision Unit. The patient has come into the ER. The doctor doesn’t know if they should admit or discharge. Sometimes, they are waiting for results or waiting for imaging to open up an appointment and they will decide after that. It gets them out of the ER. I refer to tbe CDU as the “Can’t Decide Unit.”

Is malpractice still a thing in the US? I haven’t heard it mentioned in the news much in recent years. It’s not a thing in Canada. Patients get compensation but doctors are protected by general insurance.
I don’t hear about it much. I think it has to do with going both ways of not taking of a vital bed or not having someone come back to the ER 24 hours later and then admitting them.
We have to pay for ER visits here. The patient. If I go and don’t get admitted, I pay $200. That’s with insurance. Some people can’t afford to come back a day later and possibly have that happen again. I don’t think the hospital is thinking about that, though.
We have been beyond our bed capacity for all of 2025. I think we have been using the CDU as overflow, too. That kind of sucks if you are there for over a day. The rooms are probably not very nice. Probably, no tv. Not that you’d watch it
I heard from an electrician in the hospital this week that the hospital wants to add 300 inpatient beds. That would make 650. Outpatient services minus oncology and transplantation would have to move to another building. I think we are already doing this. It is gradual, so the departments like laboratory, facilities, housekeeping, kitchen have to deal with the extra work and not get any additional employees.
