I don’t support the AfD but I get it. The Germany that people my age grew up with is dead. Germans my age mourn it. Reviving it is not one of the options but they choose to keep it alive for as long as they can and then accept its death, rather than let Germany evolve into something they find ugly.
Imagine if you could extend your life by 100 years by accepting that your consciousness would be transferred into a metal robot. Would you take the deal? Sure you get to live 100 years longer, and perhaps forever, but you are no longer you, at least not as you remembered yourself, and you find the new form ugly. Repulsive, even. That’s the choice Germans face.
If I were German, I would choose to live and then try like hell to make the new Germany look as good as it can look, while accepting that it will look nothing like it once did. I’m not German, though, and I have no vote. I understand those who choose to hold on to their memories until they can’t anymore, and then die.
