They’re building a few coal plants but as the build them, they’ve announced their phaseout. They’re building nuclear faster than coal, and renewables faster than nuclear. I think it approaches certainty that they’ll have the cleanest air on earth in time.

They’re on track to be at 10-20% coal by 2045 vs 5-10% in the US and 0% for Canada. All numbers are projections for 2045. Their current targets would have them measuring better overall air quality than the US within about 20 years. Less if they are aggressive, and they are being aggressive. 60% of new cars sold in China are electric, and it is projected to reach +90% within a few years. Given that they are, by far, the largest auto market in the world, this alone could tip the scales in their favour as the US under the Orange Idiot is going backwards.
