Cars

Trump just enacted 25% tariffs on all cars coming in to the USA. With this move, he just singlehandedly destroyed the US auto industry. The USA is 15% of the world market for cars. When other countries retaliate, the US industry is going to be in a mess. Beyond this, almost all auto parts will go up in price for Americans (and only Americans). And almost all electric cars are made outside the US so the US will be stuck on gas vehicles as the rest of the world moves forward. Trump appears determined to destroy the USA.

I was going to look at a mazda tomorrow. Hopefully, it doesn’t go up in price too much.

If you buy one that’s already in the country, it should be fine BUT parts are likely to go up 25%.

Getting a red 2025 mazda cx50 hybrid tomorrow. I’ll take pictures although it is supposed to rain for days.

Plan is I drive it for 4 years. Then it becomes my wife’s and I get another.

Congratulations!

Thanks!

Congratulations! Do you understand the hybrid? Is it just like a moped or pedal assist electronic?

What happens? It has a gas engine and electric motors? Does the drive shaft disengage?

Honestly I haven’t looked this stuff up. Try to explain Dan like we are trying to make one of the early or first Lamborghini or Ferrari. No chat gpt etc. just layman’s knowledge.

What fuel also? Flex fuel?

lol@pedal assist. I need one of those cars.

I really like the CX-50 and CX-90. I rode in a CX-90 to get the money to pay for my Mazda and I just loved it. Super comfortable. I loved my German cars over the years, but I am happy to now be in Mazda. I don’t think the company can survive long term, but neither can I so I don’t care. For the next 5 to 10 years, I’ll drive our Mazda (and may add one more for days we don’t feel like scrunching into the Miata.

EDIT: Or not (to adding another one). There’s a cool factor to having a Miata as your only car which is simply higher than if you have several cars. Just one car is where I want to be.

Lots of blurred memories as a child in a Mazda glc.

I remember the GLC. It stood for ā€œGreat Little Carā€ as I recall. I don’t remember ever riding in one but in retrospect, it looks like a Great Little Car.

I’ll upload some more soon. It’s literally freezing rain right now.

That is a really pretty car. I admit, I’m not crazy about the hatch back. I prefer a trunk but if I were buying a hatchback, this would be something like what I would choose for myself. Love the color too.

Thanks. The weather is still poor here. I don’t have buyer’s remorse. I have seller’s remorse. I have a lot of memories in that santa fe. I just don’t think it was going to pass inspection in May and wanted a car before the tariffs. Time to make new memories.

May they be better than your old memories.

I had sellers remorse for a minute. All the bells and whistles going off in your new car will make you forget all about that. Do you have drive assist on this car? I have twenty that says your first mechanical failure will be due to a faulty sensor.

I looked up the transmission for a hybrid like your model and it’s still CVT.
CVT is popular but has its problems. One problem though is with Japanese manufactures not selling parts for repair. You would have to get lucky and find one totaled in the junkyard.

I can’t find the video about the mechanic complaining. Also tariffs might make those foreign import parts more expensive than they already are. It’s not just foreign automakers but even US auto companies have a good percent of parts manufactured abroad.

But remember that deal Trump made with the Japanese about some billion dollars of trade and Japan saying they would work the double it? I think it might go in your favor of you have faith.

You might even see some US production plants for Mazda with no tarrifs creating jobs in the future.

This could be like the movie/ series Gung Ho. Business booming , hard work, and lot of laughs .

Toyota makes the best transmissions in the world. This has a toyota engine and a toyota transmission. They make the best hybrids and have made them for 25 years. Mazda came in 3rd for reliability in 2025 according to jd power.

As far as reliability in general it goes…

  1. Hybrid
  2. Gas
  3. Electric
  4. Plug in hybrid

Nissan makes crap cvt transmissions. Actually, they don’t make them. Another Japanese company does and Nissan never went to anyone else. Toyota makes the best transmissions. They are nothing like Nissan.

I wish I was better at AV. I still have to set up my dash cam. I’m not good at snaking.

It’s illegal in Massachusetts to mount a dash cam to your window, but nobody pays attention to it or doesn’t know. I wonder if the cops know. It’s probably a dumb reason they can pull you over and cite for something else.
