uhm no the world would probably be the same (except for a lot of animals who wouldnt be given a life and then of course also wouldnt be killed and eaten anymore… which brings up the interesting discussion whether its better to live a life and be killed and eaten at the end… or to not live at all)
oh and yes food is necessary, humans wouldnt exist in our current form if our ancestors didnt eat both meat and plants and in order to live we do need to kill and eat animals and/or plants 
since our bodies are created with the tools of omnivores its only natural to eat both animals and plants, but sure if you are willing to take the time and investigate and be careful and can afford to pay more for your food and eat lots of different plants and/or supplements you can go without meat
