The early Republican Party consisted of African-Americans, northern white Protestants, businessmen, professionals, factory workers and farmers. The GOP was pro-business and it supported banks, the gold standard, railroads and high tariffs; the party opposed the expansion of slavery. At its inception, Republican Party had almost no presence in the Southern United States. Excerpt from Wikipedia\* I’m not sure how much the Republican Party has changed but the Democratic Party is unrecognizable. When I was growing up I was convinced they were the working man’s party. How ignorant of me. The Democratic Party had a lot of filth to clean up after the light of the newly formed Republican Party reflected badly on the Democratic Party.
